Not sure where I got the two crossed, except maybe the page turn. If Shillelagh is the only spell in the game to do that, I'd say it's a pretty powerful spell to have in a class' repertoire. I was just wondering if there was another way to get the same/similar effect. It helps cut down on MADness quite a bit. I use Shillelagh a lot in Gish-type builds, if I can squeeze it in. The idea being to stack effects that usually use Str/Dex weapons onto an attack using another stat.įor example, you can cast Shillelagh, and use Extra Attack with the new Wis-based weapon, or stack Smite onto it, use it to deliver BB/GFB, or apply Shillelagh to your Pact Blade and get Life Drinker damage on top. The suggestions here are good, but I suppose that I should have specified that I'm talking about Melee/Ranged attacks, not necessarily Spell attacks. be entered in a monthly drawing for a free Engage 3. Not sure where I got the two crossed, except maybe the page turn. A shorter, lighter model that we simply named the Blackthorn Shillelagh. Not exactly what you asked for, may be worth mentioning though: Fire Genasi have a Con-based produce flame.I did. 17 CON+adv, taking 50 damage (DC25): 20% vs.You have surely meant Nature instead of Life, didn't you? By 5th level youve boosted your ability score to 18, so shillelagh now deals 1d8 + 4 damage, average 8.5, while shocking grasp deals 2d8 damage, average 9. 3.5 - Shillelagh.any errata Spinachcat 1 2 3 4 5 Next S Spinachcat Registered User Validated User 1 From the D20 SRD Shillelagh Transmutation Level: Drd 1 Components: V, S, DF Casting Time: 1 standard action Range: Touch Target: One touched nonmagical oak club or quarterstaff Duration: 1 min. War Caster, after +4 proficiency you are usually better off with Resilient:Īt +4 proficiency, 18 CON, vs. With an ability score of 16, shillelagh will deal 1d8 + 3 damage, average 7.5, while shocking grasp deals 1d8, average 4.5, at 1st level. Rather than Sentinel, I would go for Polearm Master since you would rely on Shillelagh (Sentinel is better if you want to cast spells more and mainly rely on OA's for swinging your weapon).Īs for Resilient vs. I would pick Resilient(CON) for the saves and concentration checks rather than War Caster (since you go to 18 CON with the resilient as well). Since you can start with 15+2 CON 15+1 WIS, 2 stat increases on WIS is a given. A cleric ideally wants 16 Wisdom, and also since you don’t get Heavy Armor you’ll need at least 14 dexterity to make full use of medium armor. A frontliner wants at least 14 Con from the start of your character. Given that Dwarves make the best clerics, you should be good (no STR needed to carry plate). Well Shillelagh only helps reduce your character’s stat reliance. Does anybody have race or feat suggestions? I could take Variant Human (currently going Hill Dwarf) IF I wanted a feat. If you are going to spend a feat on Shillelagh, I would just go Nature instead though. I don't think the War Priest abilities are that powerful except for Avatar of Battle The main things it has over Nature or Tempest is a rather impressive spell selection. Bonus actions can be spent on different things (healing word, spiritual weapon, war cleric bonus attack, etc). Shocking Grasp is 4d8 and lower chance to hit unless it has advantage (uses INT). Shillelagh at 16 is 3d8+5 with any domain that adds d8's to damage (more with a magic staff note that a +3 staff does not require attunement, but a staff of striking does). I have always taken the main value of the Shillelagh part of the equation being that you dont have to have a half-decent attack stat. However, if your attack stat is half decent then casting spiritual weapon then attacking with booming blade gives you more attacks. Pros: not electricity damage, DPS can be boosted w/ Staff's ability. Shillelagh can offer some tactical flexibility. Looks like Shillelagh comes out on top, even without using the Staff's special ability.ĭownsides: no advantage (many people wear armor), uses bonus action War Priest, however, only works (wis mod) so max 5 times per day, but in the current campaign, we rarely have more than two fights per day. The word in the title is a wooden walking stick that Irishmen carried as t. However, War Priest, the 1st level War Cleric ability, can let me take another Attack action as a bonus action. Note that shillelagh is NOT all that and a bag of chips as far as cantrips go: It doesnt scale (at all), requires you to be in melee, and in the end is a big fat waste when compared to other, better, happier cantrips. Shillelagh spell on a Staff of Striking: d8 +5 +(staff of striking some thing here) = 9.5 damage + staff of striking damage. avg d8 = 4.5, total DPS for one cast: 18. That will end up doing (at 20th level or somesuch) 4d8 electricity damage.
